UPDATED MAR 2020. It’s an 18th-century building that has been delicately resuscitated and given a new chance at life as a charming, boutique hotel. Welcome to the Heritage Avenida Liberdade Hotel which is a charming Lisbon hotel for solo travelers. I was a guest during my recent trip to Lisbon and it was my first time in Portugal. I was welcomed with almost nonstop rain! Though I was a little unlucky on the weather side of things, I was certainly lucky with the choice of hotel. The location, extra facilities, and pool allowed me to relax and forget the gloomy weather. Let’s take a closer look at what made it so special.

The rooms
I love the unique charm of boutique hotels and the Heritage Avenida Liberdade Hotel had plenty of charm to share.
The rooms were a perfectly blended fusion of modern comforts and old-fashioned style.
I think of it as vintage chic and I love that they were able to retain a lot of the historic features of the building during the makeover.
From the large windows, you can watch the traffic go by to remind you that you are, in fact, in the heart of Lisbon. It’s easy to forget that from the quiet of the room.
The bed gave cloud-like comfort and, I don’t know where the hotel gets their pillows from, but I kind of want in on that trade secret. I slept like a baby each night!
During my visit, the Endometriosis stick hit me with a big flare up and the comfort of the room definitely helped to get me through that. When you get a flare-up while traveling as a travel writer there is no option to take a day off work.
So I was on the go all day and would crash in the evenings, wrapped up in my Heritage Hotels robe and enveloped in cozy blankets.
What sets the Heritage Avenida Liberdade in Lisbon apart
There are two main features that set this hotel apart for me.
Firstly, there is a bar area by the lobby where guests can serve themselves complimentary water, tea, coffee or even Moscatel wine.
Each time I walked by the lobby it was really nice to see groups of friends sitting on the comfy lounge chairs and chatting over their drinks of choice.
I liked that the hotel offered this because having somewhere to sit with a drink and relax in between outings is a really nice treat while you’re traveling.
The other feature I loved was the library and office room which has two computers, a Mac and a PC, each connected to a printer which guests can also use for free.
Whether you need to print your boarding passes, make tour bookings or, like me, you forgot to print your blog contracts and needed to do it at the last minute, you have space and facilities to get it all organized.

The indoor pool
Most of you guys know how much I love being in the water, so of course, I had to take a dip in the pool.
Let me tell you, after walking those steep Lisbon hills all day, my legs appreciated the water therapy!
It was like the cherry on top of an already wonderful hotel stay.
If you didn’t get enough of a workout walking around during your travels, or if you’re feeling heavy from all the delicious pastries, there is also a small fitness room by the pool with a treadmill and other equipment.
The indoor pool area is a small room with beach chairs that line the wall and warm tones which emanate such relaxing vibes.
I especially liked the vintage mural that spanned across two of the walls by the pool. The women in the vintage chic beach scene paintings were beautiful beach babes with pear and hourglass figures.
It was so refreshing to see these figures portrayed in a ‘sexy woman’ light as opposed to the usual token chubby chic that is made fun of in movies.
Being amongst these curvy women made me feel at home in my swimsuit.
The location
It’s a great choice of where to stay in Lisbon because from the hotel you can get almost anywhere on foot.
The Rossio train station is only a 5-minute walk and there is a metro station even closer than that.
There are a lot of restaurants to choose from nearby. I highly recommend the Pinóquio Restaurant for a delicious seafood meal.
I got the seafood rice which was a huge portion of flavorful food and the staff there were so friendly and made me feel welcome on my first night in Lisbon.
On your walk back to the hotel I also recommend stopping by Fábrica da Nata where you can get a fresh Pastel De Nata. It’s a must-try while in Portugal!
Things to do in Lisbon
I one million percent recommend taking a walking food tour while you visit Lisbon because the food is amazing. I took this walking food tour with Culinary Backstreets and loved it.
Taking a trip to Sintra is a fun day out. It’s an easy train ride from Lisbon. Sintra is filled with colorful castles and it’s as interesting as it is vibrant. My guide has everything you need to know to plan your day.
I also posted a guide on solo female travel in Sintra with a weekend guide with more things to do, so check that out for more ideas.
